The Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention, Treatment & Recovery (BSAPTR) has published its first Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) report for the Detroit. Please click on the title image or click here to read it. DAWN is a national surveillance system that collects drug- related emergency room (ER) visits and drug - related deaths reviewed by medical examiners. Alcohol was mentioned in over 22% ER visits in 2004 & 2005. Cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other stimulants (amphetamines and methamphetamine) were mentioned in over 76% of ER visits. Males dominated the drug related ER visits (over 60%). The peak ages were 35 - 54. Most drug users were discharged home without a referral to substance abuse treatment. This presents a great opportunity for collaboration between substance abuse providers and hospital emergency room directors/staff in order to ensure that substance users receive appropriate referrals for substance abuse services.
